Three students of Chippewa County schools will be heading to the state spelling bee at Monona Grove High school on Saturday, March 8.
The students qualified by finishing in the top four of Thursday’s CESA 10 Regional Spelling Bee at Christ Lutheran School in Chippewa Falls. Twenty-seven students competed in the event, where the winning word was espionage.
Finishing second was last year’s winner, Jamie Krause, 13, of Chippewa Falls Middle School, the son of Libby and Stuart Krause.
Krause won the 2007 regional bee in Cadott when he was a student at Christ Lutheran by correctly spelling the word grievous.
Taking third place on Thursday was Jacob Prill, 14, of the Bloomer School District. He is the son of Lisa and Donald Prill.
And finishing fourth was Edward Dresel, 12, of Christ Lutheran School, and the son of Tricia and Troy Dresel.
An Owen boy, Sam Maki, 12, won first place by correctly spelling espionage. Maki was the runnerup to Krause in the 2007 regional spelling bees.
Each of the top four students in Thursday’s bee has an alternate who, if needed, will fill in for them at state.
The alternates included: first place, Lydia Engevold, 11, of Granton; second place, Patrick McShea, 13, Thorp Middle School, son of Jennifer Mueller; third place, Cameron Bauer, 9, of Gilmanton; and fourth place, Nick Ohren, 12, Altoona School District, the son of Julie and Mike Owen.
