For the Herald - Trained volunteers from the Chippewa Valley Chapter have responded to three different fires in Chippewa County in only three days.
Local Disaster Action Team members responded to a fire in New Auburn on Sunday, Feb. 10. The team was again called to action in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Feb. 12 to provide assistance at a residence outside of Colfax. While returning to the Red Cross office from the fire scene, the team received the call for another fire in Chippewa Falls.
Disaster Action Team n or DAT n workers are volunteers who respond to local disaster events. When the Red Cross is called, DAT workers are notified and respond to the scene. The Red Cross provides assistance for food, clothing and shelter based on emergency need to victims who are displaced from their homes during a fire or other type of disaster.
Chippewa Valley Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary contributions of time and money from people of the Chippewa Valley.
During the winter months the Chippewa Valley Chapter tends to see an increase in home fires, as people tend to use alternative means to heat their homes during cold weather. The Red Cross would like to urge caution this winter for residents and discourages the use of candles, space heaters and other means of home heat that is not properly monitored and tended to.
