The Hornets pushed through four wrestlers and the Wolfpack saw three of its wrestlers advance to the state tournament in Madison. It begins Thursday.

Mike Sonnentag, Josiah Yeager and Alan Yeager won titles for Cadott. Cornell/Gilman’s Matt Kvapil won a title as well.

Sonnentag remained undefeated for the season, 29-0, as he earned a pin, major decision and a 6-4 decision against Bruce’s Bubba Gudis in the finals at 103 pounds.

Josiah Yeager improved to 42-6 for the season, recording two decisions and a pin. He pinned Evan Bohman of Stratford in 5:10 to earn the championship at 112 pounds.

Alan Yeager won a 13-8 decision against Spring Valley/Elmwood’s Cory Lasure in the finals at 189 pounds. Yeager, 43-4, also won by a pin and a decision.

Kvapil won all of his matches by decision, including 5-3 against Stratford’s Mark Marquardt at 140 pounds. Kvapil takes a 26-5 record to Madison.

The Yeagers and Sonnentag will be joined by 152-pounder Gage Burish. Burish lost to Kyle Vanderhoof in the semifinals and was given third place by rule when Vanderhoof lost the championship match. Burish is 15-8.

After Gudis was sent to the second place match by Sonnentag at 103 pounds, he won by rule against Cornell/Gilman’s Corey Hodowanic. Hodowanic wrestled his way back to the second place match after losing to Gudis to open the tournament. Hodowanic heads to the state tournament with a 34-5 record.

Andrew Phelps made it to the championship match at 119 pounds but lost a major decision to Blair-Taylor’s Ryan Capouch.

Phelps was guaranteed a spot at the state tournament when he wrestled in the second place match against Park Falls’ Justin Schienebeck, and Schienebeck won the pairing by a major decision. Phelps will take a 30-4 record to Madison.

Grant Weltzin was the closest Hornet to join his teammates in Madison. The 285-pounder finished fourth after losing to Shell Lake’s John Curtis, 12-6, in the third place match.

Cadott’s Roy Munroe, David Guns, Ryan Peterson and Shane Geissler were unable to place in the top three. Cornell/Gilman’s Quinn Hrdlicka also did not qualify for the state tournament.
