Girls basketball: Jensen sets career mark

NEW AUBURN — Cornell’s Courtney Jensen went where no Chiefs girls basketball player went before as she scored her 1,000th point in a 50-34 win in New Auburn.

Jensen is the sixth member of Cornell’s 1,000-point club and the first female to do so. She hit a basket with a couple of seconds remaining in the third quarter to reach the plateau.

New Auburn halted the game to recognize the senior center and Trojans coach Bill Peterson said the school gave her the game ball for her accomplishment.

“It was kind of a relief for her when she did it. She had some looks, but she got it on an outlet pass with two seconds left,” Cornell coach Jason Onsager said.

Jensen finished with 26 points and 20 rebounds for the double-double and led all scorers. Cornell’s (9-7, 8-3 ELC) Amanda Smith added nine points in the East Lakeland contest.

New Auburn (4-13, 3-7 ELC) was down 28-16 at halftime, but the Trojans were able to cut the lead down to three points by the end of the third quarter. However, the Trojans used all of their energy in getting the game close again that it allowed the Chiefs to pull away in the fourth quarter, Peterson said.

New Auburn was led by Dani Goodremote, Marisa Baldry and Sasha Nelson each with nine points.

Ladysmith 58, Bloomer 41

In Ladysmith, the Lumberjills outscored the Blackhawks in each of the four quarters to earn the Heart O’North victory.

Melissa Fuchs connected for 20 points to lead the Lumberjills (11-5, 7-4 HON), including going a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line.

Hannah Rothbauer led Bloomer (5-11, 3-8 HON) with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Greta Gumness added 10 points.
