ELK MOUND — With no time on the clock, Rachel Deetz canned a pair of free throws, lifting the McDonell girls basketball team past Elk Mound in non-conference action Monday night, 44-42.
With the game tied and less than two seconds on the clock, Deetz received an in-bounds pass, drove to the basket and was fouled as the buzzer sounded.
The Macks, who snapped a five-game slide, trailed 34-31 after three quarter before going on a 13-8 run over the final eight minutes, capped off by Deetz’s free throws.
Ellen Plendl led McDonell (4-11) with 15 points as Jess Freagon added 13. Deetz was third on the team with 10.
“I am obviously very pleased with the win,” McDonell coach Kurt Geissler said. “There was a definite change in how we played in this one. We worked together and I think matured as a team along the way.”
