An inmate at the New Lisbon Correctional Facility has been charged with two Chippewa County burglaries on Dec. 28, 2006, was previously charged with a third, and may be responsible for others as well.
Daniel J. Detaege, 45, is accused of breaking into Lake Wissota Meat Market and Bill’s Southside Auto Repair.
City officer Ryan Douglas’ action led to an arrest in the case.
The officer responded to a burglar alarm at River Country Co-op and en route ran the license plate number of a vehicle heading in the opposite direction from the scene.
The vehicle was registered to Detaege. The co-op had been burglarized and cash taken.
Investigation at the scene of the Lake Wissota Meat Market burglary revealed tire tracks in the parking lot and a cigarette butt nearby in an abandoned driveway.
DNA found on the cigarette butt matched Detaege, who said he hadn't been in the Chippewa Falls area for two years.
However, police interviewed a witness who showed where evidence from burglaries was thrown and claimed to have helped Detaege create a story about his vehicle being stolen.
Detaege was found to be in possession of bank bags from Northwestern Bank and products labeled from Lake Wissota Meat Market, a search warrant revealed.
There were three other burglaries in the county that night, one in Boyd and three in Stanley.
Detaege, who has a previous criminal history of burglary and was on parole for burglary at the time, was charged last
