THORP — Just days after suffering a double-digit loss second-ranked Neillsville, the Thorp girls basketball team bounced back with a resounding victory of its own, beating rival Stanley-Boyd 49-27 in East Cloverbelt Conference action Friday.
“It was good to see how they were able to respond after a tough loss,” Thorp coach Kent Weiler said. “I am very pleased with how we played.”
The Cardinals (9-3, 6-2 ECC) blew the game wide open with a 20-10 rally in the final eight minutes, many of which came from the line.
“They (Stanley-Boyd) got into some foul trouble and we were able to take advantage,” Weiler said. “We also got our defense back on track.”
Thorp’s defense bullied and pestered the Orioles from the start, holding Stanley-Boyd (6-5, 4-4) to one field goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Cardinals allowed only five total field goals and held the Orioles best player — Holly Mertens — to nine points. Mertens fouled out in the fourth quarter as well.
On offense, Lindy Bergman paved the way for Thorp, netting 21 points.
Eau Claire Regis 68, McDonell 43
In Eau Claire, the Ramblers caught fire in the second quarter and pulled away from the Macks in a West Cloverbelt contest.
The Macks were within two points after the first quarter and the two teams played neck-and-neck basketball early in the second quarter.
“We played solid. We played them even and close, but we started to lose it in the second quarter and it snow-balled from there,” McDonell coach Kurt Geissler said.
The Macks (3-9, 2-6 WCC) were led by Ellen Plendl with 15 points.
Eau Claire Regis (7-5, 6-2 WCC) had five girls score double figures, led by Kara Poirier and Rachel Gallagher each had 12 points.
Cornell 61, Winter 48
In Cornell, the Chiefs used a big third quarter to pull away from the Warriors in East Lakeland play.
“We really started out slow. This was finals week and our only game of the week,” Cornell coach Jason Onsager said.
Courtney Jensen and Amanda Smith each had a double-double for the Chiefs (7-4, 6-1 ECC). Jensen finished with 15 rebounds and 22 points. Smith, the team’s point guard, had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Amy Surlaski had 15 points to lead Winter (2-8, 1-6 ECC).
Gilman 51, Cadott 42
In Gilman, the Pirates first West Cloverbelt victory of the season came at the expense of the Hornets.
Judy Stanek and Kelly Toporek combined for 35 points, Stanek had 20, for Gilman (3-9, 1-7 WCC).
“It’s good not to be in the cellar,” Gilman coach Craig Amborn. “We’d like to get up into the fifth spot, but we’ll see.”
“The effort was a lot better. We competed tonight at least. We had opportunities, but we just couldn’t finish,” Cadott coach Pat Quimby said.
Cadott (3-9, 2-6 WCC) was led by Cody VanDenHeuvel with 25 points.
