Thieves are going right to the source to get around the problem of high gasoline prices.
Two different companies reported gasoline had been stolen directly from delivery trucks last week.
DJ’s Auto Mart, 337 E. Park Ave., Chippewa Falls, reported 30 gallons of gas stolen out of a delivery truck on the premises on Jan. 9.
Thaler Oil, Co., 310 S. Main St., Chippewa Falls, reported 26 gallons of gas taken from trucks the following night.
And this isn’t the first such incident for either company.
Steve Thaler said they’ve noticed gas missing three times since Jan. 4.
John Salden, owner of DJ’s Mart, said they’ve had two such incidents recently.
“We all need to be careful,” he said. “There’s something going on around here.”
Salden said with the weakening of the dollar, more people are after any commodity they can get their hands on.
He said he knows of three farmers who have had gas stolen from their tractors. He also cited a December theft of copper from Bohl & Proulx Plumbing, Inc.
“You have to make sure you have everything under the sun locked up,” he said.
Salden said their goal is to help the police catch whoever is responsible for stealing the gasoline.
“We’re doing everything we can to catch them,” he said.
He said whoever stole the gas must have known what they were doing because it would have been very difficult.
