James W. Mathews, 87, of Chippewa Falls, formerly of Mount Horeb, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at the Chippewa Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation in Chippewa Falls.
He was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Homestead, Penn., to Mary (Kisch) and Walter Matthews. He grew up in Gary, Ind., where he graduated from Horace Mann High School.
James enlisted in the U. S. Army on Sept. 21, 1942, and served during World War II in the European and North African Theatres. He was honorably discharged as staff sergeant on Dec. 12, 1945.
James married Harriet M. Lindoo on Jan. 31, 1953, in Ladysmith.
He continued his education earning a B.A. Degree in Sociology from DePaul University in 1949, a Masters Degree in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame in 1951, and a M.S. in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin in 1954.
James became superintendent of the Wisconsin Corrections Camp System and resided in Mount Horeb. He also served as an interim warden at the Wisconsin State Prison at Waupun. He retired from the Corrections System in 1988. He was a member of the American Corrections Association, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Mount Horeb. James and Harriet moved to Chippewa Falls in May 2006.
Survivors include: his wife, Harriet Mathews of the Chippewa Manor; a sister, Bertha Shea of Kensington, Md.; his brothers-in-law, Roger Lindoo of Chippewa Falls and Max (Marie) Lindoo of Eau Claire; his special niece, Meral Ergen and family of Izmir, Turkey; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers, George, David, Albert, and Ernest.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Chapel of the Resurrection at Chippewa Manor Nursing Home in Chippewa Falls, with Father Edmund Doerre of Holy Ghost Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Ladysmith.
Friends may call a half-hour prior to the service Saturday at the Chapel of the Resurrection.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in James’ memory be directed to the State Department of Corrections Recreation Department or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
In his personal and professional life, Jim was a man of integrity, intellect and good humor. He left the world a better place.
