Lake Hallie changes fencing ordinance

LAKE HALLIE — The village of Lake Hallie isn’t about to turn into open range any time soon, but property owners with fences may have to rethink their strategies.

The village board on Monday approved an amendment to and ordinance on fencing requirements and retaining walls, and as a result some property owners will receive letters telling them they’ll have to comply.

Under the ordinance revision:

-- At-grade structures, such as sidewalks, steps, patios and driveways now have to be placed 5 feet from any property line.

-- Retaining walls also must be 5-feet back from the property line and must not exceed 42 inches tall.

The reason for the 5-foot space is to prevent people from removing snow into their neighbors’ yards, and also for water draining purposes.

Fences in the side and back yards of Lake Hallie property may not exceed 6 feet.

-- Fences in the front yard cannot exceed 42 inches, except when they are for an in-ground patio, when special regulations apply.

-- Barbed wire and electric fences are not allowed, except in agricultural, commercial and industrial districts.

Special circumstances will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, said Doug Clary, the village zoning administrator.
