Final numbers for the 2007 gun deer hunting season were released by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday.
Chippewa County saw about an 8 percent decrease in the deer kill for the deer hunting season that ended Sunday.
There was about a 12 percent decrease in the number of bucks killed and a 5 percent drop in antlerless deer.
In Dunn County, there was an overall 1 percent decrease while Eau Claire County saw a drop of 13 percent.
Wednesday's printed and E-Edition versions of the Herald will have a complete story about the deer kill numbers.
While the normal nine-day gun hunting season is over, there’s still plenty of hunting left this year in Chippewa County woods.
For example, the muzzleloader season started Monday and continues through Wednesday, Dec. 5.
The following day, the statewide antlerless deer hunt will start. It runs through Sunday, Dec. 9.
The antlerless hunt replaces the T-zone hunts in specific hunting units in October and December.
Hunters will need their hunting license and an additional $2 permit to participate in the December antlerless hunt locally.
No matter what the season, it’s still wise for people living in rural Chippewa County to keep the hunting seasons in mind and wear bright — preferably orange — clothing visible to hunters.
It has now been six years since a woman who was walking her dogs was accidentally shot to death in the town of Colburn by a hunter during the muzzleloader season. A jury later found the hunter not guilty of a criminal charge in the woman’s death.
