A Boyd woman made an initial appearance in Chippewa County Court Tuesday on a charge of misdemeanor obstructing an officer in connection with the Sept. 12 fire in Boyd that severely injured a woman.
A criminal complaint was filed Monday against Barbara L. Molash, 47, 7345 320th St.
Already charged with attempted murder, attempted arson and aggravated battery in the case is Timothy A. Terry, 22, 3713 Cudahy Ave., Cudahy.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the fire just off of Highway 29 in the town of Edson, just outside of Boyd, at about 2 a.m. Sept. 12. Responders found Lorenz, 7363 320th St., Boyd, outside the burning building with severe injuries. She suffered burns, smoke inhalation, and a skull fracture. Lorenz’s eyes were swollen shut, she had a split lip and was bleeding from several areas on her face, according to court documents.
Terry, who had been staying at Molash’s residence, was identified as the one who pulled Lorenz from the fire.
The chain of events that led to the fire and to Lorenz’s injuries are not clear in the criminal complaints filed against Terry and Molash.
The obstruction charge against Molash appears to be based on inconsistent statements made about who threw away a t-shirt Terry had been wearing that night and how he came to be wearing a flannel shirt.
Molash told investigators she took the flannel shirt clean out of her closet and gave it to Terry just before he was transported in an ambulance. That happened well after he pulled Lorenz from the fire. That time line is not consistent with stains found on the shirt.
Also, the complaint against Molash indicates she was present when Terry pulled Lorenz from the fire. Molash told investigators that she did not see flames inside the building until Terry opened the door and that before that he was frantic, “screaming like a school girl” that he
could not do this” and had “to get her out.”
A review hearing is set in Terry’s case for Nov. 27. Molash is to appear in court again Dec. 18.
