Xcel Energy to take to the air to monitor lines

A helicopter will be flying over some neighborhoods and rural locations for the next four to five weeks as a part of Xcel Energy inspecting its major electric transmission lines.

The flights will start Monday.

The utility’s transmission lines extend east from the border of Minnesota to the Eau Claire area and north from La Crosse to Ironwood, Mich.

The flights let the utility to spot defects or loose fitings from the air. Trouble spots that could cause power outages will be identified and repaired.

Xcel Energy said the patrols will take place during daylight hours. The helicopter will fly within 50 feet of the lines, or hover near a transmission structure if something needs a closer look.
