County flu shot clinics start Friday

Walk-in flu shot clinics have been scheduled by the Chippewa County Department of Public Health through the county during October and November.

The price of a flu shot is $25. Pneumonia shots are available for $40.

Medicare and personal payment are accepted. For children who are ages 6 months of age through 18 years of age, vaccine is available at no charge (as long as supply is available.)

The health department said the flu season can start as early as October and last until May, and says October and November are the best months to get a flu shot.

“Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Every year in the U.S. more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications,” the health department said in a press release.

People who should be protected by a flu shot include the elderly, young children, pregnant women and those who live in settings such as nursing homes.

“If you live or work with someone who may be at higher risk of flu complications, or just want to reduce your risk of getting the flu, you should get a flu shot, too,” the health department said.

For more information or to confirm flu shot clinic schedules, call the Health Department at 726-7900 or (800) 400-3678. Or go to the department’s Web site at: www.co.chippewa.wi.us/ccdp.
