Dispose of household hazardous waste at cleanup

For the Herald - If Chippewa County residents haven’t had a chance to get rid of their household hazardous wastes or old appliances/computers this year there is one more collection date this fall.

Chippewa County will be providing residents with a special clean up to dispose of their household hazardous wastes, appliances, computers, fluorescents bulbs, and scrap metal in an environmentally safe manner. Improper disposal of these products can cause fires, injuries to people and animals and groundwater contamination.

The cleanup date is 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds at 306 Jefferson Ave., Chippewa Falls.

Stains/varnishes, pesticides, poisons, antifreeze, mercury, aerosol cans, household batteries and waste oil will be accepted at the household hazardous waste collection.

Latex paint is NOT accepted. A fee is charged for fluorescent bulbs.

Water softeners, mattresses, tires and furniture will not be accepted at the collection.

Other appliance and computer items will be charged at the following rates:

Appliances cost $10 to dispose of, and include refrigerators, trash compactors, freezers, water heaters, dehumidifiers, stoves, furnaces, disposers, microwaves, dishwashers, humidifiers, dryers, heat pumps, washers. Other item disposal prices include air conditioners ($20), plastic TVs ($10), wood TVs ($15), monitor ($7), CPU ($6), keyboard ($1), complete computers ($10), copiers and laser printers ($.25/pound), VCRs ($4), cellphones (free).
