For the Herald - Luther Midelfort Chippewa Valley will have a tobacco cessation class in Chippewa Falls starting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10. The class is an 8-week program held in the Clinic Education Classroom of Luther Midelfort Chippewa Valley in Bloomer.
The class is designed to help you get ready to quit smoking, develop skills to quit smoking, and help you develop a support system to stay smoke free.
As of November 2006, Luther Midelfort and other Chippewa Valley healthcare facilities prohibited tobacco use, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco, inside and on the grounds of their facility.
The tobacco free decision is intended to improve the health of all patients, visitors and employees by eliminating personal tobacco use as well as the dangerous effects of second-hand smoke.
The health and economic burden of cigarette smoking reinforces the need for the tobacco free initiative in the Chippewa Valley region (Chippewa, Dunn and Eau Claire counties):
- Approximately 23 percent of adults in the Chippewa Valley smoke cigarettes.
- Fifteen percent of annual deaths are due to smoking.
- About 2,840 years are lost annually in the Chippewa Valley from the effects of smoking.
- The annual cost of cigarette smoking is estimated to be $134.1 million ($76.2 million in direct healthcare costs of smoking and $57.9 million in lost productivity).
To register for the program call 838-6252.
