Who Makes Your Day?

Calling College Graduates!

Jeanne M. Haughian

Jeanne M. Haughian, 84, of Chippewa Falls, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at the Wissota Health Center in Chippewa Falls.

She was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Chicago, Ill. to Albina (Brosseau) and Joseph Lawrence. She grew up in Marshall and Mankato, Minn., graduating from Mankato High School in 1940. She attended DePaul University for four years and majored in English. As a college student in Chicago, Jeanne contributed to the war effort by attending the USO dances held in support of the troops and corresponding with soldiers at the front. She married Thomas Haughian on May 25, 1946, in Oregon, Ill. In 1956, they moved to Chippewa Falls.

Jeanne treasured her years in Chippewa Falls and considered it her home. She fondly remembered the kindness of the neighborhood women, who made her feel very welcome, and she gave back to the community by serving as a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Leader. In the 1950s and 1960s, Jeanne belonged to many bridge clubs, Toastmistresses, Century Club, and cultivated a healthy interest in the politics of the times. After raising five children, Jeanne worked at the Northern Center for the Developmentally Disabled, often hosting the residents in her own home.

Later, in the 1970s, Jeanne worked in the Chancellor’s Office at UW-Eau Claire, where she had a distinguished career as publication editor of the faculty journal and secretary to the Faculty Senate. During these years, she also enjoyed traveling to Europe and Hawaii with her husband, Tom. After his death, she retired and purchased a house on Coleman Street. Here, she spent many joyful days hosting guests, doting on grandchildren, and caring for those needing assistance. She extended a gracious welcome to anyone who entered her home. Her great satisfaction came from helping others, and her blue Cadillac was often seen at doctor’s offices and grocery stores ferrying friends who could no longer drive.

Jeanne also spent several rewarding years as a mentor in the Chippewa Area Mentor Program. In 2005, Jeanne moved to a new life at the Comforts of Home, where she made new friends and was ably cared for by the nursing staff.

Jeanne loved animals and had many pets throughout her lifetime. Her dog, Abby, and cats, Caine and Bobby, were loyal companions during her later years. Her friends, who, over the decades, accompanied her to innumerable garage sales, casinos, and journeys to Florida, brought her much happiness. Most of all, Jeanne was devoted to her children and grandchildren, to whom she leaves the legacy of a life of compassion, grace, and congeniality.

Jeanne was preceded in death by: her husband, Thomas P. Haughian on Nov. 27, 1985, her parents, and her sister, Pearl Suess.

She predeceased her sister, Dot Brenner of Mankato, Minn., who passed away on Aug. 19, 2007.

Survivors include: her daughters, Jane Haughian of North Lauderdale, Fla., Susan Kolstad of Florence, Ky., Darcy Haughian of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Elizabeth (Del) Hasmuk of Chippewa Falls; a son, Richard (Denise) Haughian of Chippewa Falls; her grandchildren, Cayce Kolstad; Jade (Levi Theusch), Jasmine, and Rosanne Haughian; Blake, Bailey (Shane Rasmussen), and Brady Hasmuk; a great-grandson, Hayden Rasmussen; a brother-in-law, John Jansen; nephews; nieces; and friends.

A celebration of Jeanne’s life will be held at the Avalon Hotel, Chippewa Room, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 21. Interment will be at Our Lady of Lourdes, Rice Lake on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Memorials are preferred to the Chippewa County Humane Society, the Chippewa Area Mentor Program, the Chippewa Valley Cultural Association, or the Friends of the Irvine Park Zoo.

Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel in Chippewa Falls is assisting the family.
