WIAA playoff golf: McDonell to host sectional

HURLEY — McDonell’s golf team entered the season young, but it’s getting more and more experience at the right time of the year.

The Macks qualified for the sectional it hosts at Lake Wissota Golf Course Tuesday after finishing in the top three at a WIAA Division 3 regional hosted by Hurley.

“They got a good taste of what they can do,”Macks coach Archie Sherbinow said. “It was a fun 3˝ hour trip back.”

The Macks endured what everyone else in the field did as well, blustery conditions with 25-35 mph winds coming off of Lake Superior.

“In golf terms, it was a two-club wind,” Sherbinow said. “The scores reflected that. A 77 was the best score for the regional champion.”

McDonell’s Josh Hanzlik was four strokes off that pace to lead the Macks. Matt Missfeldt, John Olson and Pat Bradley rounded out the Macks who officially scored. Mike Missfeldt also competed, but didn’t factor into the final team score.

Bradley’s score was the lowest amongst the team, reaching into triple digits, but Sherbinow said he played well.

“He had one bad hole. It’s not like basketball where it’s just one play,” Sherbinow said. “It all adds up in the end.”

It was at the end of the day where the play of each of the players was followed closely, he said, making for an exciting wrap to the day.

Div. 3 at Cadott

Stanley-Boyd’s golf team finished in third place at a WIAA golf regional at Cadott and advanced to Tuesday’s sectional at Lake Wissota.

The Orioles were led by sophomore Tyler Aken’s 83. Seniors Chris Dirkes and Robert Allen shot in the high 80s at Whispering Pines with Matt Lisiecki rounding out the scoring for Stanley-Boyd.

Cadott got Cody Peters into the sectional as an individual. He shot a 77 to lead the Hornets. Mike Seeley shot a 84 and Derick Peters had a 96 to aid Cadott at its home course.

Peters’ 77 was only one shot worse than the medalist, Eleva-Strum’s Nick Rogness.
