Here’s a quick look at some of the movies in theaters right now.
“Borat” — British comedian, Sacha Baron Cohen (from HBO’s “De Ali G Show”) may have made the funniest movie EVER. Traveling across the United States posing as a news reporter from a former Soviet Republic, Cohen prays upon unsuspecting Americans, putting them in outrageous situations with hilarious results. Definitely NOT for children. Rated R. Grade: A.
“The Departed” — Riveting film about corrupt cops and mafia moles in South Boston. Scorsese is sure to be highly nominated and, in this writer’s mind, should win the Oscar for Best Director as things stand today. DiCaprio and Damon are fantastic. Nicholson is “as good as it gets!” Rated R. Grade: A.
“Flicka” — Nothing here to make this movie stand on it’s own in cinematic history. But the story is nice and wholesome and the scenery is breathtaking. Little kids and highly sentimental adults will eat it up. Rated PG. Grade: B.
“Flushed Away” — A refreshing change of pace for animated features about rats in the London sewers. Lots of fun humor aimed at the grown-ups, too. If you take your kids to one movie of the many family offerings, this should be the one. Rated G Grade: B+
“Santa Clause 3” — Martin Short’s Jack Frost attempts a North Pole coup of Tim Allen’s Santa. All I can say is that when someone referred to this as the “Santa Clause Trilogy” I threw up a little in my mouth. If you do your part and stay away, you’ll help ensure that we won’t see Jon Lovitz as Hanukkah Harry in “Santa Clause 4 — The Diversity Clause.” Rated G. Grade: C-.
“The Prestige” — One of the best and most original thrillers in the history of the genre. Christian Bale rises to the occasion to claim his place on the Hollywood A list! Rated PG-13. Grade: A+.
“Flags of Our Fathers” — Not as good as “Private Ryan” or “Thin Red Line” but still a beautiful and important film and worth the trip! Further evidence of Clint Eastwoods virtuosity as a director. Rated R. Grade: B+.
“Man of the Year” — Disappointing film that sets up a great premise and doesn’t follow through. Definitely mislabeled as a comedy, though Robin Williams is funny when he’s doing comedy, but I’d rather watch his concert film. During this one, I paid more attention to my watch. Rated PG-13. Grade: C-.
