Former Green Bay Packer first-round draft pick Ross Verba was in the area Tuesday, but it was hardly a public relations appearance.
Verba, 33, most recently an offensive guard for the Detroit Lions, checked into the Eau Claire County Jail for a night.
Verba was booked in on an extradition warrant from Las Vegas at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to an officer at the jail. He was released about noon on Wednesday when Las Vegas officials dropped their hold on him, the officer said.
The Las Vegas Review Journal reported today that a complaint filed in Las Vegas Justice Court accuses Verba of passing two bad checks at a casino, one for $20,000 on Sept. 18 and one for $30,000 on Sept. 20.
Verba is charged with two felony counts of theft and two counts of writing worthless checks.
Because Las Vegas dropped its hold on Verba does not mean he is out of trouble. The warrant stands even if the jurisdiction that issued the warrant declines to send officers to pick up the prisoner.
According to the Review-Journal, Verba is known in Las Vegas, where he has been seen hanging out with Paris Hilton and Tara Reid and spending lavishly at parties.
The Las Vegas paper reported in July 2005 that Verba won a half-million dollars at a casino, then blew most of it on a champagne spree and a big party. At the party he reportedly recruited seven women for a “hot body” contest, paying them each $10,000.
Verba was the Packers’ first-round draft pick out of Iowa in 1997, and was the starting left tackle on the Packers’ Super Bowl team that lost to the Denver Broncos.
