MADISON (AP) -- An air quality health advisory was issued for nine western Wisconsin counties by the state Department of Natural Resources because of concentrations of soot in the air.
The advisory for St. Croix, Pierce, Pepin, Buffalo, Trempeleau, La Crosse, Vernon, Crawford and Grant counties was issued Monday and continued Tuesday.
The DNR said a stagnant air mass over the upper Midwest which led to the advisory was expected to remain in place for much of this week, and the advisory could be expanded include additional counties.
Because of the concentration of fine particles in the air, children, the elderly and those who suffer from lung and heart disease were advised to limit outdoor activity.
Even healthy adults could notice the diminished air quality during strenuous outdoor exercise, the DNR's Larry Bruss said.
A lack of strong winds has allowed the concentrations of soot to build up, officials said.
